Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Noted as quite possibly the “biggest bang for your buck”, the upper and lower eyelid region can be rejuvenated with the ideal placement of incisions, removal of fat and fullness and lifting of the skin overlying this area.

This is the treatment of choice for patients seeking to rid themselves of tired, aged, or baggy eyelids only.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right For Me?

Loose, sagging skin around your eyelids can really show your age and make you look tired even after a good night's rest. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure that can help you get rid of excess skin, fine lines and puffiness, as well as reduce the thin, crepe-paper look of aged skin around your eyes.

Most eyelid surgery patients are over 35 and want to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the eye area. Good candidates for eyelid surgery include healthy non-smokers who do not suffer from thyroid disease.

It is best to check in with your ophthalmologist before undergoing any eyelid rejuvenation procedure, as patients with some eye disorders may not be good candidates for eyelid surgery.

FAQ

How does eyelid surgery work?

The eyelid lift takes approximately 30 minutes and can be performed under IV sedation or local anesthesia alone with the discomfort or increased risks. Recovery is 4-7 days. The results of this procedure often last more than 10 years.

Sedation anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used during eyelid surgery. Depending on your cosmetic concerns, incisions will be placed along the upper eyelid crease or inside the lower eyelid. Excess skin is removed to correct eyelid hooding and drooping, and fat in the lower eyelid area may be repositioned to correct eye bags and wrinkles.

What happens after eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery patients may return home the day of their procedure and should expect to spend at least 5-7 days recovering, during which time Dr. Nuveen will remove your stitches.

Dr. Nuveen will check in with you regularly to ensure you are healing properly and advise you on when it's safe to resume wearing contacts (usually 1-2 weeks) and using makeup in the eye area (usually within one week).

Some bruising and swelling after the procedure is normal but pain should be minimal, and all temporary side effects will usually resolve within 1-2 weeks. By 2-3 weeks patients can typically resume exercising and within 1-2 months, the final eyelid surgery results should start to become visible.

Are there alternatives to eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is often combined with endoscopic brow-lift, laser skin resurfacing, and a face lift for a more dramatic rejuvenation. The lower eyelid region can often be treated with incisions under the eyeball itself, eliminating the possibility of noticeable incisions on the skin.
