The face lift procedure has undergone many improvements in technique since its introduction over 50 years ago.
Is Face Lift Surgery Right For You?
Though it is a popular procedure—more than 110,000 were performed in the US in 2010—face lift surgery techniques can vary depending on the patient's aesthetic goals.
A face lift can correct conditions like:
- Sagging jowls
- Folds of skin on the neck
- Loose underlying tissues on the lower face
Optimal results from a face lift can leave you looking more than 10 years younger, leading to improved quality of life following surgery.
FAQ
Who's the ideal candidate for a face lift?
Most candidates for face lift surgery are between 40 and 60 years old with good skin elasticity. If you're considering this procedure, you should be a healthy, non-smoker.
It is also important to have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure and to notify Dr. Nuveen if you have high blood pressure, blood clotting issues or if you tend to form excessive scars.
What happens during surgery?
Today, most face lift procedures are through more modest incisions, are performed under IV sedation and local anesthesia and take anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours to perform. Most patients return to their homes for overnight recovery and evaluation the following day by the physician in the office.
Incisions are placed in the most discreet locations that still allow access to the cheeks, neck, and jaw line. Through these incisions, permanent structures of the face are lifted for retention. The skin is re-draped and excess removed.
What can I expect during face lift recovery?
The final appearance is enhanced by laser resurfacing and can take from 3-6 months to reach its optimal appearance as a result of skin tightening. Recovery is most commonly from 5-12 days depending on the variation of techniques used and bruising.
In some cases, a face lift can have a lengthy recovery lasting up to three weeks. During this time, you will need to get plenty of rest and limit your activity.
What are the possible complications or side effects?
You may experience swelling and discomfort, which may be managed with medication. The scars you may see will fade over time and Dr. Nuveen will let you know when you can apply makeup to cover the after-effects of surgery.
