IPL intense pulsed light therapy is great for treating hyperpigmentation. If you're bothered by age spots, freckles, redness and other issues with skin discoloration, then IPL may be right for you.
Rejuvenating Light Therapy
IPL Photofacials are named for Intelligent or Intense Pulsed Light. The treatment is typically used for treating pigmentation, but may also be used to remove unwanted hair.
With a quick treatment, IPL Photofacials can work to remove or reduce the appearance of:
- sun damage
- hyperpigmentation or melasma
- age spots and freckles
- broken capillaries
- rosacea or redness
During your appointment at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates, we will examine the condition of your skin and ask you about your goals for skin rejuvenation.
Based on your needs, we will be able to plan a treatment using the IPL Photofacial technology. Some patients may be candidates for other procedures such as laser resurfacing with Active FX, or a chemical peel.
Common Questions About IPL Photofacial
What areas can be treated with an IPL Photofacial?
The face, neck and hands are common treatment areas, but IPL is appropriate for skin on many areas of the body.
What does an IPL feel like?
When the IPL Photofacial device is passed over your skin, you will feel a warming sensation. The device emits beams of light that heat and damage pigment. While some patients may experience more of a heating sensation than others, an anesthetic is not necessary.
How does IPL work?
The physician will hold the IPL device and pass it carefully over the treatment site. As it emits rays of light, it breaks up and damages the areas of problem pigmentation. The pigmentation is cleared away and a rejuvenation process is started in your skin. This is also true of unwanted hair—the light causes the hair follicle to be damaged and the hair falls out.
How will I care for my skin after an IPL Photofacial?
After your treatment, your skin will likely be very sensitive. We will ask you to avoid sun exposure for a time and to apply an SPF to protect your skin, even if you do not plan on going outside.
Are there any side effects to an IPL Photofacial?
The most common side effect patients experience after IPL Photofacials is redness of the skin, which is temporary. If you have questions about possible side effects, we will be happy to discuss them during your consultation.
